The history of the company…

AutoZone began under the name of Auto Shack but because of the popularity of Radio Shack they changed their name to AutoZone. The stores retail auto parts and accessories to the public. They also started the policy of lending out tools to help their customers.

The first AutoZone manager was Doc Crain and he started the WITTDTJR theory which means “What it takes to do the job right.” The company expanded over the years and has become one of the top retail outlet stores for the general public to find auto parts and accessories for those do it yourself auto repair type people.

The private label brand of automotive batteries is manufactured in Holland, Michigan by a company called Johnson Controls. The corporate headquarters is located in Memphis, Tennessee. The very first store opened up in Forrest City, Arkansas in 1979 by Doc Crain, who help to set some of the policies and procedures that are still in effect today.

The store was originally part of a Memphis-based wholesale grocer Malone & Hyde and went under the name of Auto Shack. The sale of the grocery operation to the Fleming Companies of Oklahoma City caused Auto Shack to become an automobile retailer. When the Radio Shack outlet objected to their new name they then decided to go with the name of AutoZone.
